Conviction of Edouard Pernod Absinthe Imitations
The Wine and Spirit Bulletin: Volume 17 - Page 17 1903
A short time ago, it was brought, to our attention that a fraudulent imitation of the genuine Edouard Pernod Absinthe label was being disposed of in the City of New York. Our investigations proved that this was the case, and we thereupon instructed our attorneys to institute legal proceedings against the persons who were handling such labels. In December of last year, three such infringers were arrested on our complaint and brought before the police magistrates charged with counterfeiting the genuine red, white and blue Edouard Pernod Absinthe label. The following three were arrested: Adolph (Gruenbaum, a liquor dealer of No. 601 East Sixth street, who sold bottles bearing an imitation! of the genuine Edouard Pernod Absinthe label; Arnold Wolf, of No. 309 East Eighth street, who filled the bottles and put on the counterfeit labels; William Brown, of No. 33 Sullivan street, who printed counterfeit labels.
These three men were brought up for trial under these charges before three judges at the Court of Special Sessions in the City of New York in the month of February. All three defendants were found guilty of having made or disposed of counterfeits of the genuine Edouard Pernod Absinthe label, with the knowledge that they were counterfeits. Heavy fines were imposed on each of the three defendants for this offense, and the right of the owners of the Edouard Pernod Absinthe to their label was fully sustained.
