Absinthe Is Now Available In Boston!

Looking for high quality absinthe in Boston? You need look no further than the Wine Gallery in Boston and Brookline.

They carry two absinthes, Kubler (Swiss, 1 liter, $54.99) and Lucid (French, recipe by T.A. Beaux, 750 mL, $59.99). The Wine Gallery has two stores, one in Kenmore Square, Boston and one on RT 9 in Brookline.

What is Absinthe?

Absinthe is a spirit formed by the essence of three primary ingredients, green anise, florence fennel, and grand wormwood. Among other various mountain herbs, some other key herbs called for in many recipes for absinthe to add color and flavor are star anise, lemon balm, hyssop, and petite wormwood. The ingredients are dried in preparation for the maceration, or soaking in spirit to form an aromatic sweet mix of dry herbs.

Absinthe Now Legal In The USA

Thank you Lucid absinthe!  Lucid has challenged the status quo in regards to the FDA’s ban on products containing thujone.  While the ban stands, the margin of error has changed.  Products, including absinthe, are now allowed to contain up to 10mg of thujone.  Lucid absinthe meets this regulation and is starting to be sold in America.

I’ll be watching closely to see how the absinthe industry responds to this change.  For instance...

I came across this article today which claims that Ted Breaux has developed an absinthe recipe that had been “passed Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau.”
